Jakob Nielsen’s latest Alertbox is entitled “Let Users Control Font Size”. I agree with some of the points mentioned in this article regarding misuse of fonts, lack of easy font controls, and a disregard by designers of users that can’t see small fonts. I think that some sites are attempting to handle this by giving the user controls of the fonts and sizes used to render the pages. Something similar to what you see in the upper right on my site. No, this doesn’t solve the problem across all sites but it’s a start. This should be something that browsers should handle seamlessly on behalf of the user but don’t expect Microsoft to jump to Nielsen’s call to arms any time soon, they have bigger fish to fry.
