the friday five

dailies no comments »

i found a link to the friday five over at marties’ weblog and figured that i’d give it a shot.

  1. as a child, who was your favorite superhero/heroine? why? — i’ve had quite a few since i was into comic books a lot. if i had to choose one though i’d have to say hawkeye. i think it was because he was actually human, mortal, and was still a bad-ass.
  2. what was one thing you always wanted as a child but never got? — honestly, i can’t think of anything. my parents gave us a lot as kids.
  3. what’s the furthest from home you’ve been?zurich switzerland for training.
  4. what’s one thing you’ve always wanted to learn but haven’t yet? — art … i’ve always wanted to be more artistic than i am. i do try sometimes, but i don’t think i have it in me. maybe that’s why i’m marrying someone who is very artistic.
  5. what are your plans for the weekend? — wedding stuff, relaxing, finishing up my taxes, researching new workouts for next week, and hanging out with amy.

that was fun, maybe i’ll keep doing that, thanks martie!

i made it through the week unscathed and extremely focused on my goals. i ate pretty good except for a few meals that were eaten out and less that perfect but were far from horrible or earth shattering. i don’t think they will effect my weekly progress. i had a very good week working out. there were a few workouts that i felt a bit drained beforehand but i have to say i felt amazing afterwards. i’m looking forward to posting my progress for the week tomorrow morning.

i’m working tonight on a new exercise routine for next week. i’ve been trying to change things up every 3-4 weeks. i was worried that after the first of the year the gym would be packed so i customized this last routine around that. needless to say the gym has been pretty empty in the morning. i do realize it’s pretty early when i get to the gym, 5:45am, but it hasn’t been like this in the past. you can really tell that people dropped their new years resolutions early this year. anyhow, i’ll post my new routine up here when i have it configured.

tomorrow’s my freeday and i’m looking forward to it. a coffee and a scone sounds really good right now … cya tomorrow.

it’s been a few days since i last posted. i didn’t eat well at all this weekend. my brother and sister-in-law were in town so we spent a lot of time talking, running around, shopping etc and my meals fell apart. luckily one of my free days fell in there so i actually only ate bad for a day and one meal which lessens the impact. i’m on track again though and had a perfect day today. i really am focusing on having a perfect meal week this week. i want to end these last 4 weeks of the challenge on an up note and not a downward or even note.

i ate a bad meal on friday night so unfortunately the weight measurement on saturday wasn’t all i think it should have been. it showed me with a 2 pound loss which in itself isn’t a bad thing but i think a more realistic number would have been 3-4 pounds had i not eaten badly the night before. my body retains a lot of water when i eat bad, it’s very strange. i can easily see myself fluctuate 5-10 pounds after a free day. i guess that comes with being fat.

i was noticeably tired this morning during my cardio but i really pushed myself to make up for it. i missed my first workout of the challenge yesterday and it was an upper body workout. it’s rather unfortunate since i really like upper body workouts. i don’t plan on making it up as that could easily spiral into overtraining and wear me out this week. i do plan on pushing myself extra hard this week though as well as eating perfectly all week. i’m looking forward to a killer lower body workout tomorrow. wish me luck …

i had a really good lower body workout this morning. i felt like my form was near perfect on each repetition and i also pushed my weight as well. i was winded after the squats and lunges but taking the second or 2 between repetitions really helps. not only was i able to breath properly and focus on the muscle but i was able to maintain my form through the various sets. i’m looking forward to cardio tomorrow to see what other 10’s i can unearth.

i ate great yesterday, no bad meals and no indiscretions in the eating. i’m doing great so far today as well. i was actually able to skip a free non-healthy meal today that was given after a meeting. i just stepped out and went down to the cafeteria to get my turkey on whole wheat. the food looked great but i have other higher priorities as we all know.

astronomy rss feeds

astronomy & space no comments »

i decided to construct a list of available rss/rdf feeds that have something to do with astronomy or space exploration. enjoy and please let me know if you know of some others that i should be aware of.

  • dome news — a great feed that is updated often with some pretty interesting astronomy topics.
  • nasa’s earth observatory — a feed that has new satellite imagery and scientific information about our home planet.
  • space.com — the defacto site for all things space and astronomy related.
  • spacetoday.net — if it’s going on in space today it’s likely up here.
  • sky & telescope — it appears to be a dead feed but one can always hope.
  • tci:news:astronomy — another really great feed with tons of astronomy articles from a variety of different sources.

below are some of the other feeds that i got from news is free. i’m not sure if they will work for other people, let me know, or go to news is free and make your own feed.

and finally, if your interested, here’s the opml file for the feeds that i watch. enjoy …

so far so good this week. i’m doing my workouts in morning with no problem. in fact i haven’t missed one in 8 weeks, go me! i have however hit some problems with my eating. like my last post, these aren’t horrid situations where i eat a whole cake or something but they are road bumps. i know that with these bumps i won’t be hitting my larger weekly goals.

a few examples are this past monday on my day off i went to breakfast with chris at bakers square. i had their ham and cheese omelette with hash browns, toast, and coffee. i ate great the rest of the day. yesterday i met a friend for lunch and had a turkey panini from the corner bakery and some chips. my meals up to and after that were fine but that one hurt the day. i did actually skip my 4th meal yesterday to compensate and i wasn’t hungry at my 6th meal so i skipped that as well. i don’t know if my daily calorie intake was thrown way off, and i doubt it was. i will be hitting it extra hard this week though in an attempt to compensate for my eating. i still should be able to hit a 3 pound loss for the week if i really focus.
