the midwest meteor
astronomy & space March 27th, 2003around midnight yesterday evening a meteoroid (approximately 1 or 2 meters wide) approached earth and collided with earths atmosphere. this newly formed meteor caused a bright flash of light visible in the illinois, indiana, and michigan area. it then exploded into some 500 meteorite fragments and scattered over a 10 kilometer area in the southern suburbs of chicago. here are a few local news links covering the topic:
- meteor chunks crash in south suburb, light up night sky — nbc5.com
- meteor shower scary, stunning & ‘kind of exciting’ — nbc5.com
- flash in the sky caught on tape — abc7 chicago
it’s pretty amazing that this didn’t cause more damage than it did. i wonder how long until someone tries selling one of the fragments on ebay?
