For those of you who subscribe to my newsletter, you’ll already know that I announced this Dead in the Water cover reveal a few weeks back. You also would have been able to participate in my traditional free book giveaway contest where my subscribers guess what they see in tiny snippets of the cover I give them. If that interests you, scroll down to the bottom of this page and subscribe, or click here.
With that context setting out of the way, it’s time to reveal the work of art that Tom Edwards created for Book 2 in the Portalverse Elemental Origins series, Dead in the Water.
Spectacular, isn’t it? Where to start… where to start?
First, I’d say that while the Drowning Earth cover is an introduction to one of the main characters of book one, the HMS Bancroft, Dead in the Water is very much a dynamic action cover. It showcases the deadly submarine navigating the depths of a mysterious underwater city.
And let’s talk about that cityscape. There are mixtures of skyscrapers, pyramids, expressway looking things, cool alien submersibles, and so much more. It’s a lot to take in… which is sort of the point.
Below that masterpiece of scene making, you can see the dynamic effect Tom came up with for the title along with the logo for the series. If you look close, you’ll see that it’s a little different from book one. The cover is certainly a work of art and truly captures the effect I was going for in this book. In all, it’s everything I wanted, and I hope you love it.
If you’re interested in hearing more about this book, please head on over here and click on my upcoming Kickstarter to get notified when it starts. I’m planning on running this in March or early spring of next year.
Alright, I’m sure the next question you’re asking is, how did the guesses from my subscribers go this time around. I’ll start by showing you of the portals I gave them to guess on.
You’re probably realizing now where the circular portals were on the cover up above. Hopefully, you’re having some fun realizing what was really going on verse what you thought you saw.
Now comes the fun part, my fan’s guesses.
For Portal #1, here were a few (not all) of the ideas:
- School of fishes
- Thriving underwater city
- An underwater city scene with either traffic or fish
- A sicken city
- An underwater city
- Underwater traffic lanes in a/the capital city
- The screen from a computer on the submarine from book 1. It shows some type of sonar or something.
I think it’s safe to say that most of these, except for 4 and 7, are correct on some level. I especially love number 7 though, particularly after I saw this trailer from Modern Naval Warfare around their sonar stations. It reminded me of that while I was putting together my newsletter this past week.
Onward to Portal #2:
- The tail fin of a submarine
- A dead underwater city or one sleeping in suspended animation
- Pyramid with a light on top
- The top of a building or the top of a pyramid. It also seems to have some sort of a signaling mirror or light on the top of it.
- A road underwater leading to a portal
- The portal to elsewhere
- A alien beacon of some kind
These were either spot on, or way off in left field. So, much, fun… I love thinking about what people guess when I already know what it is because I can totally see how they came up with the guess. It’s a blast.
Alright, as I’ve said to my subscribers, all entries into this contest are eligible to win, even if they’re wrong. It wouldn’t be much fun to enter if they had to guess it right to win. There were far more entries than I could show here, but they mostly bucketed into the above. I don’t have enough room for all of them. Sorry. 😥
With that in mind, I turned to my trusty random number generator. And without further ado… the winner was.
Toni W. 🏆
Don’t worry, I would never ever share a full name. This lucky winner will have an email coming to their inbox shortly. As a prize, they’ll be choosing any one of my ebooks to receive for FREE. This includes past, present, or future books. They’re all fair game. 🎉
I hope you enjoyed this cover reveal and the sneak peek at book two of this spectacular new series. As I mentioned above, if you’re interested in following along, you can subscribe to my newsletter below, head on over to Kickstarter to get notified when book two releases, and head over to my store to buy book one, Drowning Earth. It releases to the stores on January 5th, 2024, but if you order through my store you get it early, Friday, December 8th.
Enjoy and thanks for reading.
